PAL Educational & Mentoring Initiative — Guyana
PAL is an educational program that takes place in a squatter community known locally as Plastic City. The program is supported by volunteers from the local Wesleyan partner church. The program offers 12 hours of free interactive afterschool lessons to children of all ethnicities and religious affiliations every week. Additionally the program develops leaders who influence their peers to share, care and talk out feelings rather than fight them out. Each year children are supplemented with school supplies and a school uniform to empower them to go to school each day without worry, fear or embarrassment. In addition to reading, writing and arithmetic children have discovered a safe place to simply be a child and talk about abuse and domestic violence that is rampant throughout the community. Today children have a voice and believe that they can rise higher through education, leadership development and a growing knowledge of who God created them to be.
